German Navy Considers Protecting Trade Ships in the Red Sea

The German Navy may join efforts to protect trade routes in the Red Sea, according to a statement from Mari-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the head of the defense committee in the Bundestag. This comes after an attack on a German-owned vessel, as reported by the DPA news agency.

Strack-Zimmermann expressed her support for the potential involvement of the German Navy in safeguarding the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. She emphasized the need for all countries dependent on goods transported through the region to participate in protecting trade routes, including European shipping companies.

On December 15, it was reported that the container ship MSC Palatium III, sailing under the Liberian flag, caught fire in the Red Sea after being hit by a rocket launched by Houthi rebels from Yemen. On the same day, Maersk, a shipping company, announced the suspension of container transport in the Red Sea following the attack on their vessel.

Previously, it was reported that the United States would convene a coalition in the Red Sea to deter Houthi attacks on ships.
