Arizona Governor Mobilizes National Guard to Address Migrant Crisis at Mexico Border

A fifth-generation Arizona rancher, whose property lines up against the southern border, expresses concern over the increasing presence of cartels in certain areas, diverting the attention of Border Patrol. Governor Katie Hobbs has taken action by mobilizing Arizona’s National Guard to the state’s border with Mexico, citing the federal government’s failure to secure the border. In an executive order, Hobbs outlines the Guard’s role in assisting law enforcement efforts, including fentanyl interdiction, analytical support, and human trafficking enforcement.

Arizona’s Tucson Sector has been heavily impacted by a recent surge of migrants crossing the border, with officials encountering over 17,500 migrants in a single week, setting a new record. As a result, federal officials temporarily closed the border crossing in Lukeville to reallocate resources to manage the influx. Governor Hobbs expressed frustration with the federal government’s lack of support, stating, “Yet again, the federal government is refusing to do its job to secure our border and keep our communities safe.”

The Biden administration has faced criticism from both Republicans and Democrats, including state and local officials, for not providing sufficient resources to address the crisis. The administration argues that it is dealing with a widespread crisis and has called on Congress for additional funding and comprehensive immigration reform to address the “broken” system. A request for $14 billion in emergency supplemental funding, including $1.4 billion for migrant shelter and services, has been delayed in Congress due to Republican demands for stricter asylum and humanitarian parole regulations.

Negotiations between Senate Democrats, Republicans, and the Biden administration are ongoing in an attempt to find a resolution. President Biden has expressed openness to compromise, including considering restrictions such as Title 42-style removal authority and expanded detention. However, it remains uncertain whether these measures will garner enough support from Democrats or Republicans in the House.

As the situation unfolds, Governor Hobbs and Arizona are calling for additional resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing, manage the migrant flow, and maintain a secure, orderly, and humane border. The mobilization of the National Guard reflects the state’s determination to address the ongoing crisis that threatens the safety and well-being of Arizona communities.
