The incident caused chaos for commuters traveling between New York and New Jersey as the bull strutted along the center of the tracks at Newark Penn Station. However, thanks to the efforts of the Newark Police Emergency Services Unit and the Port Authority Police Department, Ricardo was eventually captured and contained inside a fenced lot.
The rescue of Ricardo was announced by Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue, an animal sanctuary in Sussex County, through a Facebook video post. The video shows Ricardo lying down in a trailer, appearing groggy from tranquilizers, as a worker assures him that he is now safe. The bull will have over 230 acres of land at the sanctuary to graze and roam freely.
The incident at Newark Penn Station caused a 45-minute delay in train traffic and prompted a police response. This was not the first time a bull had caused chaos in Newark, as similar incidents have occurred in the past. In 2006, it took authorities 10 hours to capture a bull roaming around the city, and two years prior to that, a steer escaped a slaughterhouse and wandered the streets before being sent to a sanctuary.
New Jersey Transit expressed their relief at Ricardo’s rescue, posting on social media that the bull is now safe at his new home in Skylands Animal Sanctuary. The news of Ricardo’s escape and subsequent rescue has highlighted the issue of animal welfare and sparked discussions about veganism, with the sanctuary urging people to go vegan and spare animals from the fate of being killed and eaten.
No injuries were reported in Thursday’s incident, and authorities are commending the successful rescue of Ricardo.
