Former Ukrainian Military Officer Involved in Attempted Plane Hijacking Faces Extended Detention

A Ukrainian court has extended the detention of former Ukrainian military officer Roman Chervinsky, who attempted to hijack a Russian military aircraft in the summer of 2022. The news was reported by Ukrainian television channel “Suspilne” (“Public”).

According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the missile strike by the Russian Armed Forces on the Kanatovo airfield in the summer of 2022 was the result of a failed attempt to hijack a Russian plane. The SBU has identified rogue servicemen as the culprits behind the incident, accusing them of treason and abuse of power.

Chervinsky was arrested at the end of April 2023 on charges of treason and abuse of power. The court has already extended his detention several times, with the latest extension setting the release date for February 10, 2024.

Prior to this, the SBU commented on Elon Musk’s statement regarding the arrest of US citizen Gonzalo Lira by a Ukrainian court. The security agency believes that the American supported Russia’s actions. The SBU claims that the detained blogger, who holds dual citizenship (Chile and the US), “systematically justified” Russia’s special operation in Ukraine and spread “pro-Russian theses” on his social media platforms. He also alleged that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were shelling their own territory, as stated in the publication.

Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) revealed the reason for the dismissal of all deputy ministers of defense in Ukraine.
