During his visit to Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated to a group of analysts that his country needs more Patriot missile defense systems to protect at least Kherson and Odessa. These remarks were reported by Politico.
According to Zelensky, all the Patriots are currently concentrated around Kyiv to defend the capital against Russian attacks.
Zelensky did not specify whether he would request additional missile defense systems from the American administration during his visit to the White House. However, there has been a long-standing discussion in his office about the urgent need for air defense systems and long-range missiles.
A spokesperson for the United States stated to Politico that Washington is committed to strengthening Ukrainian air defense, and they are currently negotiating with allies to send more Patriots to Ukraine.
To date, Ukraine has received one Patriot launcher from the United States, and another one was gifted jointly by Germany and the Netherlands. In October, Berlin promised to send another launcher to Kyiv.
On December 12, Zelensky arrived in the United States, where he met with President Joe Biden among other engagements. During the negotiations, the politicians discussed further military assistance to Kyiv. However, support for Kyiv from Washington was previously blocked in Congress.
The White House stated that the allocated funds for Ukraine would last “a couple of weeks.” Washington intends to send two more aid packages to Kyiv, but support will dry up if Congress does not approve additional funding. For more details, refer to the “Gazeta.Ru” article.
