Hezbollah Rockets Target UN Mission in Lebanon, Threatening Peacekeepers

In a statement released by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), it is reported that the armed wing of the Shiite party Hezbollah has launched rockets into Israeli territory from positions just 130 meters away from UN peacekeeping mission sites in Lebanon. This marks the second time this week that Hezbollah has carried out missile attacks on Israel. One rocket was launched just 130 meters away from the UN complex, and additional rocket launches towards Israel were detected from the same area.

The Israeli armed forces emphasize that such actions by Hezbollah constitute a systematic violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and pose a threat to the lives of UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) personnel.

According to information published by the army, a school was also located approximately 150 meters away from the launch sites.

Earlier, Israeli military reported shelling from Syria and Lebanon. In response, Israeli fighter jets struck targets belonging to the Syrian army and Hezbollah.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after thousands of Hamas militants infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip on October 7. Over two hundred hostages were taken.

On this day, Hamas launched thousands of rockets into Israeli territory and announced the beginning of Operation “Flood of Al-Aqsa.” In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the country was in a state of war.

The Lebanese Shiite organization Hezbollah expressed its support for Hamas. Rocket attacks from both sides ensued. On October 19, the Israeli army announced that border areas of the country were shelled from Lebanese territory. According to the IDF, several anti-tank rockets were fired towards the kibbutz of Manara.

It is speculated that the Lebanese Shiite organization Hezbollah could potentially overcome Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system in the event of a conflict in the Middle East, according to experts cited by Bloomberg.

Earlier in Israel, the possible involvement of Hezbollah in the war was referred to as a “fatal mistake.”
