Samuel Slater, a billionaire Biden campaign donor and bundler, was nominated to serve on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) earlier this year. However, questions have been raised about Slater’s qualifications and his close ties to the Biden administration.
Slater is the managing partner of Tremont Asset Management, a real estate firm based in Boston. He also serves on the board of the Seattle Kraken NHL team and co-founded Burn Later Productions, a Hollywood film studio. Despite his extensive involvement in the private sector, Slater has limited experience in the aviation industry, leading critics to question his suitability for the role.
Furthermore, Slater’s significant campaign contributions to Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. He individually donated nearly $140,000 to Biden’s campaign and an additional $150,000 to Biden’s inaugural committee. While Slater insists that these donations do not present a conflict of interest, watchdog groups and Republicans on the Senate Commerce Committee argue otherwise.
Tom Jones, co-founder and President of the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), a right-leaning nonprofit watchdog group, criticized Slater’s nomination as an example of Washington’s “swampy” practices. Jones called on the U.S. Senate to reject Slater’s appointment and restore transparency and accountability to the government.
In addition to the concerns regarding his campaign contributions, Slater’s personal lifestyle has also come under scrutiny. Reports suggest that he recently purchased a luxury private jet from adult entertainment company Playboy and frequently travels via private jet, as indicated by social media posts. These revelations have further fueled criticism of his appointment, with some questioning the environmental impact and ethical implications of such lavish travel choices.
The White House and Slater Family Holdings, the firm owned by Slater’s family, have not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
