US Plans to Expand Naval Operations in Response to Houthi Attacks on Commercial Ships

In response to the recent attacks by Houthi rebels on commercial ships, the United States is planning to expand its operational group in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. This move aims to ensure the uninterrupted flow of commercial shipping in the region. The Washington Post reports on this development.

The US intends to augment the Combined Task Force 153 (CTF-153), a coalition consisting of 39 countries with its headquarters in Bahrain. Many nations have a vested interest in maintaining smooth commercial navigation in the region and therefore need to combat the Houthi rebels at sea.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken affirmed that the United States is prepared to take all necessary measures to protect its vessels and personnel from Houthi attacks. A group has been assembled to strengthen efforts in safeguarding maritime transportation. Additionally, the US has imposed sanctions on individuals and entities involved in financing the Houthi rebels and their actions.

On December 10, it was reported that a French multi-purpose ship had downed two drones in the skies above the Red Sea, near Yemen.

Previously, the US had announced that Houthi rebels had targeted three commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
