An Ohio grandmother has been arrested after allegedly shooting her 6-month-old granddaughter in the face intentionally, causing critical injuries. Mia Desiree Harris, 43, is currently facing three counts of felonious assault, although the charges may change as the investigation progresses, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident took place in Liberty Township, Ohio, on Saturday at approximately 1:50 a.m. Deputies responded to a report of an infant shot and discovered that a 6-month-old had been shot in the head. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones stated, “It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose. This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I’ve ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby. What makes it even worse is this is the baby’s grandmother.”
The child was critically injured and immediately transported to a hospital for treatment. Despite undergoing two surgeries, she remains in critical condition. Mia Desiree Harris fled the scene before deputies arrived but was apprehended a short time later on northbound Interstate 75 without incident. Witnesses identified her as the shooter. The sheriff’s office revealed that Harris had shot at several family members before intentionally targeting the infant.
The motive behind the shooting appears to be an argument among family members. Harris obtained a gun and allegedly fired at her daughter, missing her, before turning the weapon on her own granddaughter. Sheriff Jones expressed his disbelief at the lack of remorse displayed by Harris, stating, “She went and shot this child and doesn’t appear to have any remorse whatsoever. I feel sorry for the baby, the family, everybody that’s dealing with this. This is as bad as it gets.”
Mia Desiree Harris is currently being held without bond at the Butler County Jail. The investigation is ongoing, and the charges against her may be subject to change.
