New Hampshire Skier Rescued After Triggering Avalanche on Mount Washington

A skier in New Hampshire was rescued on Mount Washington after triggering an avalanche and sustaining a severe leg injury. Dominic Torro, 30, was skiing with a friend in a wilderness area when the incident occurred. Torro’s friend and another skier immediately called 911 for help. Thankfully, no one else was caught in the avalanche.

The distress call was initially relayed to U.S. Forest Service Snow Rangers, but it was beyond their jurisdiction. However, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers quickly diverted their efforts from a deer case investigation to respond to the rescue call. They worked on a rescue plan, involving a National Guard helicopter and the Mount Washington Auto Road Sno-Cat vehicle.

Due to the severity of Torro’s injury, a joint phone call was made to a highly experienced backcountry paramedic for medical guidance. Following the paramedic’s instructions, Torro’s condition was stabilized. While waiting for the helicopter, the skiers cleared a space on the side slope, ensuring there was enough room for the paramedic and litter basket to load Torro and hoist him back up.

Torro was then transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for further treatment. The current condition of Torro has not been disclosed.

Mount Washington, standing at 6,288 feet, is known for its challenging skiing conditions. The Mount Washington Avalanche Center has issued a general advisory period, but it has not yet reached a daily hazard rating.

The two skiers who assisted Torro decided to hike out and ski down on their own. Fortunately, they safely reached their vehicles and left the mountain without any issues.

Sgt. Glen Lucas praised the collaboration between multiple organizations involved in the rescue effort, highlighting their fluid teamwork.

It is worth noting that this incident occurred in New Hampshire and is not directly related to the political context mentioned in the introduction.
