The head of the European Union’s foreign service, Josep Borrell, has described the situation in the Gaza Strip as apocalyptic, comparable to the destruction of cities in Germany during World War II. Speaking at a press conference following a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Borrell emphasized the catastrophic and even apocalyptic situation in Gaza, resulting from terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7th and Israel’s subsequent military response, which has caused an incredible number of civilian casualties.
According to Borrell, civilian casualties make up 60% to 70% of all conflict-related deaths, amounting to a minimum of 18,000 people. However, Borrell noted that this number could be higher, as it is unknown how many people are still trapped under the rubble.
“To comprehend the scale, the destruction in Gaza is comparable to, if not surpassing, the destruction in German cities after World War II,” said the EU’s foreign service chief.
Earlier, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, described the healthcare situation in the Gaza Strip as catastrophic during a meeting of the Emergency Committee. On December 2nd, a team of WHO specialists visited the Nasser Hospital in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, where overcrowding has reached three times the acceptable capacity with one thousand patients. According to Ghebreyesus, the conditions for providing medical assistance there are unimaginable.
Borrell, speaking after the Union for the Mediterranean forum in Barcelona, called the provision of humanitarian aid to those in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone meaningless, as tomorrow they may no longer exist.
