Venezuelan Defense Ministry Responds to US Military Exercises in Guyana

The Venezuelan Defense Ministry has responded to the announcement of US military exercises in Guyana, stating that it will not hinder the return of Essequibo to Venezuela. In a statement on social media, Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez criticized the “unsuccessful provocation” by the United States in support of ExxonMobil in Guyana, calling it a step in the wrong direction.

“We warn that we will not be deterred from our path to reclaim Essequibo. Do not be mistaken! Long live Venezuela!” wrote Lopez.

The Venezuelan military official’s comments come after the unexpected announcement of joint aviation exercises between the United States and Guyana on December 7th.

Prior to this, it was unclear what measures Guyana would take to protect Essequibo.

In response to the ongoing territorial dispute, the United Nations Security Council is planning to hold a closed-door meeting on Friday. However, an immediate resolution is not expected at this time, according to agency sources.

Earlier, the US State Department had called for a peaceful resolution to the dispute between Venezuela and Guyana.
