Magill responded by stating that if speech turns into conduct, it can be considered harassment, and that the decision depends on the context. Stefanik pressed for a clear answer, to which Magill reiterated that it could be considered harassment.
Following the hearing, Magill released a video addressing her previous remarks. She acknowledged that her focus had been on the university’s policies aligned with the U.S. Constitution, which protect speech. However, she admitted that she should have given more consideration to the fact that advocating for genocide is an incitement to violence.
Magill’s initial comments drew criticism from Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who called them “unacceptable” and suggested a lack of leadership at the university. The situation has sparked a broader conversation about antisemitism on college campuses.
