IAEA Experts Find No Evidence of Mines or Military Equipment at Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have conducted an inspection at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and have found no evidence of mines or military equipment in the turbine halls, according to a statement released by the agency. The experts were unable to access all areas of the turbine halls, but their initial findings indicate the absence of any objects that could potentially compromise nuclear safety.

This inspection comes after reports of Russian servicemen, along with the Russian National Guard, ensuring the security of IAEA observers at the ZNPP. It is crucial to ensure the safety and integrity of nuclear power plants, especially in a region of geopolitical tension.

On December 2, the ZNPP experienced a power outage from the external transmission line, leading to a reliance on diesel generators for nearly five hours. However, the station was able to meet its own electricity needs during this period. The restoration of the 750 kV “Dniprovska” line on December 2 at 8:07 reinstated the regular power supply.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has previously suggested that Ukrainian attacks on the ZNPP would not have been possible without support from Western actors. While investigations continue, the IAEA’s inspection provides valuable insights into the security measures and conditions at the ZNPP.

It is crucial for international bodies like the IAEA to conduct thorough inspections and assessments of nuclear power plants to ensure the safety of both the facilities and the surrounding areas. The findings of this inspection will contribute to a better understanding of the situation at the ZNPP and help in the development of appropriate safety measures.
