The Defense Committee in the Bulgarian Parliament has given its approval for the transfer of non-functional and out-of-service anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) to Ukraine. This decision comes as Ukraine continues its efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities amid ongoing conflicts. The Bulgarian Telegraph Agency reported that the approval received majority support from committee members, with 11 members voting in favor, four expressing opposition, and one abstaining.
Deputy Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov emphasized the necessity of this transfer, stating that the SAM systems in question cannot be repaired within Bulgaria. He further added that the search for a solution to address the issue of non-functional missiles has been a long-standing concern for the country.
In addition to the transfer of SAM systems, the Defense Committee has also granted permission for Ukrainian mechanized battalions to undergo training and preparation in Bulgaria. This move aims to enhance the capabilities and readiness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), allowing them to effectively respond to potential threats.
The approval of these measures comes amidst discussions within the Bulgarian Parliament regarding the delivery of armored vehicles to Ukraine. Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov has expressed confidence in the parliamentary majority’s ability to overcome any potential veto by President Rumen Radev.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has recently announced the establishment of a Ukrainian fleet of naval drones. This development signifies Ukraine’s determination to modernize its naval capabilities and adapt to evolving security challenges.
