Westchester County Executive George Latimer Launches Democratic Primary Challenge Against Rep. Jamaal Bowman

Retired deputy sheriff Joy Farrow co-authored “Street Smart Safety for Women.” George Latimer, Westchester County, New York’s executive, officially launched his Democratic primary challenge against left-wing “Squad” member Rep. Jamaal Bowman. Latimer’s entry into the race has generated significant attention due to the political dynamics and controversies surrounding both candidates. As the race heats up, Latimer aims to position himself as a new leader who will listen to all voices and deliver real progressive results.

Latimer’s decision to challenge Bowman comes after filing a statement of candidacy for Congress with the Federal Elections Commission. The heavily-Democratic district, which includes Westchester County’s southern suburban areas and parts of the Bronx, has been embroiled in controversy over Bowman’s political stances and comments that are perceived as anti-Israel. This has caused concern among the district’s large and influential Jewish community.

Bowman, who defeated three-term incumbent Eliot Engel in a stunning upset during the 2020 primary, has faced criticism for his stance on Israel and his actions within the House of Representatives. He pulled a fire alarm before a vote to avert a government shutdown, for which he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count. Bowman’s calls for a cease-fire at the onset of the Israel-Hamas war and his boycott of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s speech to Congress further fueled the controversy.

In contrast, Latimer, a well-known New York Democrat with a three-decade-long political career, has never lost an election. He has emphasized his progressive achievements in transportation policy, housing policy, Black maternal health, and more. Latimer’s campaign video highlights Bowman’s voting record against resolutions condemning Hamas and accuses him of hindering infrastructure development in the district.

Speculation about Latimer’s candidacy has been circulating for months, driven by voters’ desire for a congressman who supports Israel and represents the views of Jewish voters. Pro-Israel groups, including AIPAC, are expected to provide significant support to Latimer’s campaign. However, Bowman has pushed back against these claims, running Facebook ads that highlight his support for a cease-fire and accusing AIPAC of flooding his district with attack ads.

As the primary race between Latimer and Bowman unfolds, it is set to be a closely watched contest, both locally and nationally. The outcome will not only impact representation in New York’s 16th Congressional District but also reflect broader debates within the Democratic Party on issues such as Israel, progressive policies, and effective leadership.
