Russia Revives Soviet-era Counterintelligence Service SMERSH on New Territories

In a recent announcement, Lieutenant General Andrey Gurulev, a member of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee, revealed that Russia has revived the counterintelligence service SMERSH on new territories. Gurulev made this statement on his Telegram channel.

According to Gurulev, the new department operates based on the principles of the Soviet military counterintelligence. He stated, “We talked about SMERSH. Today, we have created a department that operates in a similar manner on new territories.”

He also suggested that a similar counterintelligence service could be established in other regions of Russia.

The structures of SMERSH existed in the USSR from 1943 to 1946.

Earlier, Deputy of the State Duma, Andrey Gurulev, called for isolating or destroying the “remaining rot” in Russian society. He made this statement during the program “Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov” on the channel “Russia 1.” Later, Gurulev clarified his statement about the “rot” opposing Putin, stating that he considers those who advise Russia to end military actions in Ukraine as enemies.

Recently, portraits of SMERSH agents were showcased in St. Petersburg.
