Russia Considers Reviving Soviet Military Counterintelligence Agency SMERSH

In a recent radio interview, Major General Sergei Lipovoy, Chairman of the Presidium of the All-Russian organization “Officers of Russia,” commented on the statement made by Lieutenant General Andrey Gurulev, a member of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, regarding the revival of the SMERSH service in Russia. The service will operate in new territories based on the principles of Soviet military counterintelligence.

Lipovoy emphasized that the revival of the service is necessary in the current conditions to identify sabotage groups and undermine the work of agents from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

“These recruited saboteurs engage in subversive activities, gather information about our troops, and identify locations and methods for potential terrorist acts. The service proved its worth during the Great Patriotic War,” the officer noted.

According to Lipovoy, the service will consist of personnel from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB).

The SMERSH structures existed in the USSR from 1943 to 1946.

Gurulev previously stated that counterintelligence, besides operating in new regions of Russia, could also operate in other Russian territories.

Earlier, Gurulev stated that there is currently no need to declare a new wave of mobilization in Russia, as the demand for military personnel is met through contracted soldiers.

In St. Petersburg, portraits of SMERSH agents were recently displayed, highlighting the historical significance of the organization.
