Levar Stoney Announces Run for Virginia Governor in 2025, Pledges to Prioritize Opportunity and Equality

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, a Democrat, declared his candidacy for the Virginia governorship on Monday, with a focus on providing equal opportunities for all Virginians. Stoney’s announcement came in the form of a campaign video, in which he emphasized the need for a fair shot at success for every resident of the state.

Stoney, who hails from a working-class background, expressed his commitment to creating a level playing field for families like his own. He highlighted the importance of access to quality education, stating that many children, including himself, could thrive if given the right chance. Stoney also acknowledged the struggles faced by hardworking parents, like his father, who work multiple jobs but still find it difficult to live a secure, middle-class life.

Having been the first in his family to graduate high school and college, Stoney brings a unique perspective to his campaign. Currently serving his second term as Richmond’s mayor, he previously served as the first Black Secretary of the Commonwealth. Stoney has been actively working to improve the lives of residents by focusing on initiatives such as enhancing the city’s finances, infrastructure development, constructing new schools, and reducing the poverty rate.

In the upcoming Democratic primary, Stoney will face Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer known for her bipartisan approach during her tenure in Congress. Spanberger officially declared her bid for the governorship last month, adding further competition to the race.

Meanwhile, Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin is term-limited, as the state prohibits consecutive terms for its governors. Although no Republicans have announced their candidacy yet, Attorney General Jason Miyares and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears are considered likely contenders. Outgoing Republican state Sen. Amanda Chase, who previously ran for the party’s nomination for governor in 2021, has also expressed interest in running.

The race for the Virginia governorship in 2025 is expected to be highly competitive, with both Democrats and Republicans vying for the position. As the campaign unfolds, voters will closely monitor the candidates’ proposals and track their progress in addressing key issues affecting the state.
