A horrifying incident in Fort Dodge, Iowa has left a mother, Brittany Skoland, critically injured after being mauled by three pit bulls. On November 24, police responded to a neighbor’s call for help as they heard Skoland screaming in agony. Despite the officers’ attempts to scare away the dogs, the relentless animals continued attacking her. In a desperate move, an officer had to resort to using his firearm to fatally shoot all three pit bulls.
Skoland’s injuries were severe, resulting in the amputation of both her legs and parts of her hands. She also suffered from significant head trauma, which necessitates facial reconstruction surgery. After being initially treated at Unity Point Trinity Medical Center, Skoland had to be airlifted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines for emergency treatment.
Her family is now facing the daunting task of supporting Skoland’s recovery and providing disability accommodations for her. They have started a fundraising campaign to help finance a wheelchair ramp and wider doors for her home to ensure accessibility. The community has shown tremendous support, with donations pouring in to assist in her rehabilitation.
Teresa Hanus, Skoland’s aunt, shared the extent of her injuries, stating, “She has had both legs amputated to her knees and parts of her hands. She is going to need facial reconstruction surgery, she also has serious head trauma and much more.” The family is determined to make the necessary modifications to the house so that Skoland can regain some semblance of normalcy in her life.
While the incident is being investigated by the police, no charges have been filed at this time. The focus remains on Skoland’s recovery and ensuring that she receives the support she needs during this difficult time.
