Russia and IAEA to Hold Consultations on Nuclear Safety at Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

Moscow, December 2 – The General Director of the state corporation “Rosatom,” Alexey Likhachev, and the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, have agreed to conduct comprehensive consultations on the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in January-February. This news was reported in Rosatom’s Telegram channel. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN Climate Conference (COP-28) in Dubai. The publication states, “The focus was on issues related to nuclear and physical nuclear safety at the Zaporizhia NPP. In particular, the discussion revolved around the work of the IAEA mission at the plant and the upcoming rotation of agency experts scheduled for December 5.” Additionally, Likhachev confirmed his support for the IAEA’s activities in promoting nuclear power as a sustainable energy source and expressed readiness to continue collaboration in this field. As a result, Russia joined the agency’s statement and the group of countries on the role of nuclear energy in the climate agenda. The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River near the city of Enerhodar. It is the largest NPP in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity, with six power units each generating one gigawatt. In October 2022, the station came under Russia’s ownership. However, Ukrainian forces regularly shell both the plant and the neighboring Enerhodar. As Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu stated, the Kiev regime is seeking to create the appearance of a nuclear catastrophe threat. The IAEA has repeatedly emphasized the need to establish a safety zone around the NPP.
