House Republicans Push for Formal Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., joined ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’ to discuss the House voting to expel George Santos and the GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Johnson emphasized the necessity of a formal impeachment inquiry vote against President Biden, citing the White House’s stonewalling of investigations into alleged wrongdoing by the Biden family. Johnson’s remarks were made during a Saturday appearance on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” where he, along with Stefanik, spoke on various topics and addressed plans for a vote on impeachment.

The House GOP is anticipating a vote to formalize the impeachment inquiry of President Biden before the House of Representatives breaks for the December recess. House Rules Committee Chairman Tom Cole expects to receive the legislation “sometime next week,” paving the way for a House-wide vote shortly thereafter. Rep. Carlos Gimenez also expressed confidence in a House-wide vote before December 15, highlighting the need for Republicans to take action due to the presence of “plenty of smoke” surrounding the allegations against Biden.

During a closed-door House GOP Conference meeting, Oversight Chairman James Comer, Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, and Ways & Means Chairman Jason Smith reaffirmed their case for lawmakers investigating Biden and his family. Republican Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern emphasized the importance of understanding the difference between an impeachment inquiry and impeachment itself, stating that the meeting aimed to determine where the votes stood.

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy previously directed the House to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden in September, but the White House dismissed the probe as illegitimate without a formal vote. However, the administration’s resistance to cooperating with House investigators’ subpoenas has led even Republicans in districts won by Biden in 2020 to support formalizing the inquiry.

Oversight Democrats issued a memo rebutting Republicans’ claims, citing a “mountain of evidence” that clears Biden of any wrongdoing. They accused Republicans of cherry-picking and distorting facts to continue a “sham investigation” driven by retribution for former President Trump.

The push for a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden reflects growing concerns among House Republicans regarding alleged misconduct by the Biden family. The upcoming vote will determine the trajectory of the investigation and mark a significant step in the ongoing political landscape.
