House Oversight Committee Demands Hunter Biden’s Deposition in Impeachment Inquiry

Americans in Nashville weigh in on Hunter Biden’s business dealings and whether the first family did anything illegal

In a significant development, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan have demanded the deposition of Hunter Biden later this month. This move is part of their efforts to determine whether the House of Representatives will draft articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden. The lawmakers have made it clear that Hunter Biden will receive no “special treatment” during the deposition.

Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, offered an alternative proposal of a public hearing, where Hunter would answer questions and offer his testimony directly before the American people. However, Comer and Jordan insisted that the deposition is necessary for potential legislative reform relating to federal ethics and financial disclosure laws. They are also investigating whether there are grounds to draft articles of impeachment against President Biden based on evidence suggesting that he was aware of his family’s business ventures and sought to influence potential deals that financially benefited them.

Comer and Jordan stated that witnesses have testified about Hunter Biden’s involvement in selling the Biden ‘brand’ and how he facilitated meetings between his father and foreign business partners. They also pointed to an FBI FD-1023 form that detailed a bribery scheme involving President Biden and his son.

Lowell’s claim that there is no evidence to support a finding that Hunter Biden’s business dealings implicate his father’s official actions was dismissed by Comer and Jordan, who argue that the evidence already gathered supports their claims. They accused Lowell of attempting to discredit the allegations against Hunter Biden and attack the integrity of witnesses.

Regarding Lowell’s request for a public hearing, Comer and Jordan asserted that it amounted to a demand for special treatment and an attempt to avoid a deposition. They emphasized that Mr. Biden must appear before the committees as compelled by the subpoenas and that the investigation will proceed without interference.

Comer and Jordan noted that Justice Department, FBI, and IRS officials, as well as Hunter Biden’s business associate Devon Archer, have all testified in transcribed interviews and depositions. They mentioned that other Biden business associates are cooperating with the subpoenas without demanding a public hearing.

The committees have given Lowell until December 4 to confirm Hunter Biden’s attendance at his deposition, scheduled for December 13. Comer and Jordan assured that the deposition will be transparent, with transcripts being released unless they contain classified information.

Democrats have criticized Comer and House Republicans for not accepting Lowell’s offer of a public hearing, claiming that it demonstrates a weak case against Hunter Biden. However, Comer dismissed these claims, stating that the deposition has always been planned as an essential part of the investigation.

Comer emphasized the extensive amount of evidence accumulated by the committee and the need for a deposition to ask the hundreds of questions they have for Hunter Biden. He highlighted the transparency of the investigation, stating that transcripts will be released to the public.

This development in the impeachment inquiry against President Biden has significant implications for his administration and the ongoing debate surrounding the Biden family’s business dealings. It remains to be seen how the deposition will unfold and what impact it will have on the political landscape.
