In the latest episode of the ongoing rivalry between former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Matt Gaetz, tensions have escalated as the two Republican lawmakers exchange verbal blows in separate media interviews. The focus of their clash revolves around questions about divisions within the Florida congressional delegation.
During an interview with Politico, McCarthy made a cutting remark about Gaetz, stating, “You have Gaetz, who belongs in jail, and you have serious members.” McCarthy’s comment seems to allude to the ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz, which involves allegations of sexual misconduct and financial misuse.
Not one to back down, Gaetz swiftly responded to McCarthy’s criticism in an interview with the same outlet. He retorted, “tough words from a guy who sucker punches people in the back,” referring to recent allegations that McCarthy assaulted Rep. Tim Burchett by elbowing him in the kidneys. Gaetz further added, “The only assault I committed was against Kevin’s fragile ego.”
The strained relationship between Gaetz and McCarthy has been apparent for some time. Back in October, Gaetz filed a motion to remove McCarthy as House Speaker, which ultimately led to McCarthy’s ousting. Throughout the process of selecting a new House speaker, McCarthy frequently took jabs at Gaetz. In the end, the position was filled by now-House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Gaetz and Burchett were among the eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to remove McCarthy from his position. In response, Gaetz called for a House ethics investigation into McCarthy after the alleged assault of Burchett.
McCarthy denied the intentional nature of the incident, but Burchett saw it differently. He expressed his surprise, stating, “You don’t expect that sort of thing from an adult, certainly not one who was once third in line for the White House.” Burchett even challenged both McCarthy and himself to take a polygraph test to ascertain the truth of the matter.
The ongoing feud between Gaetz and McCarthy highlights the deep divisions within the Republican Party, particularly within the Florida congressional delegation. While McCarthy accuses Gaetz of wrongdoing and questions his credibility, Gaetz retaliates by pointing out McCarthy’s alleged physical aggression and questioning his moral character.
