Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Pushes for Impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas Over Border Crisis

El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells joined “FOX News Live” on Wednesday to discuss the urgent need for a permanent border wall solution and a stronger approach towards China and Mexico in addressing the influx of fentanyl into the United States. Meanwhile, Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia has reintroduced articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. This comes after her previous impeachment effort against him failed earlier this month.

During her remarks on the House floor, Greene asserted that Mayorkas has “failed to maintain operational control of the border.” She cited high levels of illegal immigration, including migrants with possible terrorist ties, as well as violence and drug smuggling, all of which she deemed a “direct national security threat.” Greene further accused Mayorkas of making it easier for illegal aliens and drugs to enter the United States, thereby endangering American citizens, while simultaneously making it harder for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to expel such threats.

Greene argued that Mayorkas’ actions are inconsistent with his duties and have resulted in a loss of trust among Americans. However, a statement from the Department of Homeland Security to Digital dismissed Greene’s impeachment effort as “baseless” and “completely without merit.” The statement emphasized the commitment of DHS personnel to keep America safe and called on Congress to focus on reforming the broken immigration system, reauthorizing vital tools for DHS, and adequately resourcing the department’s critical work to combat fentanyl and enhance border security.

Mayorkas has faced sharp criticism from Republicans for his handling of the southern border, particularly in light of record numbers of migrants and illegal activity. There have also been reports of attacks on border agents. Greene has been vocal in demanding his removal and has accused him of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” However, her previous attempt to impeach Mayorkas was met with resistance from members of her own party. In a House vote, eight Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the impeachment effort, resulting in a 209-201 vote against it.

Greene took to Twitter to address the failed effort, expressing frustration with members who prioritize “bloviation” and “imagining themselves wearing a powdered wig” over taking action. She argued that impeachment is a necessary due process that would hold Mayorkas accountable for his alleged violation of border security laws. Greene urged the Senate to try Mayorkas in a trial, as evidence of his law-breaking has been presented.

It is worth noting that the article presents a critical view of Mayorkas and emphasizes the concerns raised by Republicans, particularly Greene. Additionally, it highlights the divisions within the GOP, as some Republicans chose to vote against the impeachment effort or did not vote at all. The article also acknowledges the response from the Department of Homeland Security, which dismisses the impeachment as baseless and emphasizes the importance of addressing immigration reform and border security.
