Five Venezuelan migrants were apprehended in two separate incidents last week for stealing merchandise worth hundreds of dollars from retailers in the suburbs outside of Chicago, according to authorities. One of the incidents occurred at a Macy’s store in Oak Brook, where Lenguieyer Guevara-Muro, 27, and Jinder Moises Angulo-Aparicio, 20, allegedly concealed clothing worth $770 in a foil-lined bag and left the store without making any payment. When approached by loss prevention officers and a police officer, Guevara-Muro resisted arrest and had to be subdued. Both Guevara-Muro and Angulo-Aparicio have been charged with burglary and retail theft.
In a separate incident the day before, three Venezuelan migrants were arrested by Elmhurst police for stealing over $500 worth of merchandise from a Kohl’s store. The suspects, Ilys Mary Ledesma Zapata, 37, Christian Johan Saavedra-Omona, 21, and Braud Pineda Avendano, 33, were found in possession of a large magnet used to bypass anti-theft devices in the store. They have also been charged with burglary and retail theft.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin expressed concern over the repeated incidents involving Venezuelan migrants. All five suspects have been charged with burglary and retail theft, with Guevara-Muro being held pre-trial while the other four defendants have been released as per the judge’s order.
Earlier this month, Oak Brook Deputy Chief of Police Reid Foltyniewicz warned the public about an increase in criminal activity related to Venezuelan migrants. These incidents highlight the need for heightened awareness regarding thefts carried out by individuals from the migrant community in Chicago.
