GOP Congressman Faces Expulsion from Congress as Democrats Seek to Remove Him Amid Campaign Funds Scandal

FOX News senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram reports on findings surrounding the GOP congressman’s use of campaign funds. A California Democrat will introduce a privileged resolution to expel the disgraced New York GOP Rep. George Santos from Congress. The spokesperson for Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., confirmed to Digital that the congressman will be noticing a privileged resolution in a Tuesday floor speech to expel Santos from the House of Representatives. Garcia is expected to speak on the floor at 2 p.m. to notice the resolution. New York Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman is also leading the resolution with Garcia.

In what could be a significant blow to the Republican Party, George Santos, a GOP congressman from New York, is facing expulsion from Congress as Democrats take action to remove him amidst a scandal involving the misuse of campaign funds. The move comes after a damning House Ethics Committee report accused Santos of various wrongdoings, including using campaign funds for personal purposes and engaging in fraudulent conduct. If expelled, Santos would be the first Republican lawmaker to be removed from the House, marking a significant moment in Congressional history.

The privileged resolution, which will be introduced by a California Democrat, seeks to expel Santos from the House of Representatives. As a privileged item, it will have to be taken up by the House within two legislative days, forcing the House Republican majority to vote on the measure. This vote could potentially narrow the already slim majority for Republicans. Santos, however, remains determined and has expressed his willingness to stand for the expulsion vote on the House floor.

Despite the allegations and mounting pressure, Santos has remained defiant. In a recent post, he stated, “Expel me and set the precedent so we can see who the judge, jury, and executioners in Congress are. The American people deserve to know!” Santos had previously announced that he would not seek re-election to Congress following the release of the House Ethics Committee report.

The report detailed several instances of misconduct, including the wiring of $50,000 in campaign donations to Santos’ personal account, which were allegedly used for personal expenses such as paying down credit card bills, luxury purchases at Hermes, and smaller purchases at OnlyFans and Sephora. The bipartisan subcommittee unanimously agreed that Santos knowingly caused his campaign committee to file false or incomplete reports with the Federal Election Commission and engaged in fraudulent conduct.

If the expulsion is successful, it will mark the first time a lawmaker has been removed from the House since expelled Ohio Democrat Rep. Jim Traficant in 2002. Traficant faced expulsion after being convicted of multiple felony counts, including bribery and racketeering. Notably, all five members who have been expelled from the House in its history have been Democrats, making Santos potentially the first Republican to face expulsion.

The resolution to expel Santos is gaining momentum, with Rep. Robert Garcia from California and Rep. Dan Goldman from New York leading the charge. Their efforts highlight the determination of Democrats to hold politicians accountable for their actions, particularly when it comes to the misuse of public funds. The outcome of the expulsion vote will not only impact Santos’ political career but also serve as a significant test for the Republican Party’s ethics and the integrity of the House of Representatives.

In conclusion, the potential expulsion of GOP Congressman George Santos from Congress amid a campaign funds scandal has captured national attention. Democrats are taking action to remove him, citing his alleged misuse of funds for personal gain. The move comes after a bipartisan House Ethics Committee report highlighted numerous violations committed by Santos. If successful, Santos would be the first Republican lawmaker to be expelled from the House, marking a significant moment in Congressional history. The resolution to expel Santos is gaining traction, signaling a push for accountability among politicians and a test of the Republican Party’s commitment to ethics.
