The incident occurred on Saturday evening near the University of Vermont’s campus, and the victims, Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid, and Tahseen Ahmed, are currently hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Jason J Eaton, was arrested on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities are treating the shooting as a hate crime, as more details about the incident emerge. Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad stated, “In this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime.” Mayor Miro Weinberger also emphasized the possibility of a hate crime and assured that it is being prioritized in the investigation.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) expressed their belief that the shooting was motivated by the victims’ Arab heritage. According to the ADC, the victims were wearing keffiyehs and speaking Arabic when they were targeted. The organization condemned the incident and called attention to the rise in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment in the United States.
ADC Director Abed Ayoub emphasized that hate was a significant motivating factor in the shooting, adding that the surge in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment is unprecedented.
