A longtime Mississippi lawmaker, Democratic Rep. Earle Banks of Jackson, has been sentenced to two years of probation and has already paid nearly $85,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to a federal charge of willfully making a false statement on a tax return. Banks, who has been serving in the House since 1993, is a funeral director and attorney. Despite his conviction, he will be able to continue serving at the state Capitol and has expressed his intention to remain in office, according to his attorney Rob McDuff.

While the guilty plea could have resulted in a prison sentence of up to three years, it does not disqualify him from holding public office in Mississippi. Banks, who ran unopposed for reelection this year in House District 67, located entirely in Hinds County, has previously pursued a seat on the Mississippi Supreme Court in 2012 but was unsuccessful.
