A Suffolk County correctional officer in New York has been arrested and charged with third-degree criminal sexual act and official misconduct after allegedly forcing an inmate to perform a sexual act. The officer, 35-year-old Jason Middleton from Central Islip, was apprehended on Friday following an investigation into the allegations by the district attorney’s office.
According to the authorities, Middleton violated his oath and preyed upon an individual whom he was sworn to protect. The district attorney, Raymond Tierney, stated that the abuse of trust by correctional officers will not be tolerated. He also expressed gratitude to the Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
The investigation revealed that Middleton, between April 26 and September 29, 2023, took an inmate into a blind spot in the correctional facility where security cameras could not capture video footage. In this secluded area, Middleton allegedly coerced the inmate into performing oral sex, threatening repercussions if the inmate disobeyed him. The officer also warned that he would plant contraband in the inmate’s cell, which could lead to additional charges against the victim.
Middleton was arrested by the Public Corruption Squad and is expected to be arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court. As the offenses are not eligible for bail, he will likely be placed on supervised release. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr., expressed shock and disgust at the officer’s actions, emphasizing that they do not reflect the dedication and professionalism of the men and women of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.
