Attorney General Merrick Garland has announced that federal authorities are investigating the shooting of three Palestinian students in Vermont over the weekend as a potential hate crime. The suspect in the shooting, Jason J. Eaton, 48, was arrested and arraigned on three counts of attempted second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty and is currently being held without bail. Two of the victims were wearing keffiyehs, traditional scarves worn by some in the Middle East, and were speaking Arabic at the time of the shooting.
Garland emphasized that no person or community should have to live in fear of hate-fueled violence and expressed his commitment to addressing hate crimes in the country. He also mentioned that updates on the investigation in Vermont will be provided soon.
The investigation into whether the shooting was a hate crime is ongoing, and both the ATF and the FBI are involved in the case.
