Israel’s security agency, known as SHABAK, was aware of Hamas’ plans for an attack but failed to adequately prepare for the threat, according to sources within the country’s Ministry of Defense, as reported by Haaretz.
It is noted that the military intelligence received a detailed plan regarding the attack.
“Israel did not adequately prepare for the threat and, it seems, did not believe that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza intended to carry out this plan,” emphasized the Ministry of Defense.
On October 30, the United States announced the disregarding of SHABAK’s warnings about the escalation of the conflict by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
However, on November 7, The Guardian reported that the attack plan against Israel was not known to the majority of Hamas supporters until the morning of October 7.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on October 7 when Hamas announced the start of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation, and thousands of armed supporters infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of war.
The goal of Israel’s counter-operation, named “Iron Swords,” was to repel the attack, free over 200 hostages, including foreign nationals, and destroy Hamas. As part of achieving this objective, Israel carried out massive missile strikes on the Gaza Strip from the first day of the operation. Additionally, the Israeli National Security Council decided to halt the supply of water, food, goods, electricity, and fuel to the strip. Humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza only began on October 21 through the Rafah Crossing, but their volume is considered insufficient.
