Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin Appeals Conviction as He Gets Stabbed in Federal Prison

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of murdering George Floyd in Minnesota in 2020, has appealed his conviction. In a recent incident, Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, where he is currently serving his sentence. The stabbing occurred on Friday, and Chauvin was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Chauvin’s conviction for Floyd’s murder had sparked violent protests nationwide. He was sentenced to a 21-year federal sentence for federal civil rights charges and a 22.5-year sentence for the state-level charge of second-degree murder. These sentences are being served simultaneously.

This recent incident is not the first at the prison. In November 2022, another inmate attempted to shoot a visitor in the head but failed due to a misfire. Chauvin’s attorney had previously requested that his client be kept away from other prisoners.

Chauvin’s appeal comes as he claims to have new evidence that shows he did not cause Floyd’s death. He argues that if he had been aware of a pathologist’s theories from Kansas, he would not have pleaded guilty in 2021. It is worth noting that Chauvin filed this request without a lawyer.

The Bureau of Prisons has not provided any official comment on the incident. Chauvin’s appeal and the stabbing incident add further controversy to the high-profile case that has garnered significant attention both nationally and internationally.
