Illegal Border Crossing: 20 Romanian Nationals, Including Organized Crime Suspects, Arrested After Entering US from Canada

Bodycam footage released by the Dallas Police Department shows an officer-involved shooting with suspect Juan Vincente Zavala Lopez, who allegedly fired on police during a chase, injuring an officer. In another incident, a group of 20 Romanian nationals, including two individuals with ties to organized crime, were apprehended after illegally entering the United States from the Canadian border.

According to a press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Border Patrol agents spotted four vehicles crossing the international boundary from Canada into the United States. Agents quickly responded to the area on Lincoln Road in Hodgdon, a rural town in northeastern Maine.

Using emergency equipment, Border Patrol agents successfully stopped the vehicles and transported the individuals to Fort Fairfield Station for processing. It was determined that most of the apprehended individuals were family members, consisting of 10 adults and 10 juveniles. Additionally, two of the processed subjects were found to have ties to transnational organized crime.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent in Charge Dennis Harmon expressed concern over the rise in apprehensions in the Houlton Sector. Harmon stated, “In the last three Octobers, Houlton Sector encountered a total of 33 individuals. In fiscal year 2024 alone, we’ve encountered 53.”

This recent apprehension comes shortly after the indictment of a Romanian national, Ionel Niculae, who was arrested near Lynden, Washington. Niculae was attempting to smuggle six Romanian nationals into the United States via the Washington-Canadian border. The incident occurred when the car he was driving flipped over, injuring three passengers.

The increase in illegal border crossings and the presence of individuals with organized crime ties highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies. The CBP is working diligently to secure the borders and prevent such incidents from occurring. However, the apprehension of these Romanian nationals serves as a reminder of the complex nature of border security.

It is important for authorities to continue monitoring and addressing the issues related to illegal border crossings. The cooperation between law enforcement agencies, such as the Dallas Police Department and CBP, is crucial in ensuring public safety and maintaining the integrity of the border.
