Tennessee authorities on Tuesday evening announced the capture of fugitive Sean Williams, who is accused of raping women and children, in Florida after a weeks-long chase down the East Coast.
Williams, the former owner of Glass and Concrete Contracting LLC in Johnson City, was recently arrested and charged with 20 counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, three counts of child rape, and three counts of sexual battery stemming from three separate cases in Washington County before he escaped custody in October.
State and federal law enforcement officials, including U.S. Marshals, were able to trace Williams to a pickup truck stolen out of North Carolina on November 17. They then tracked the truck to Pinellas County, Florida, last week through their investigative work.
Authorities received a tip from a 7-Eleven clerk in Largo, Florida, who reported that Williams had been in his store. With the help of a K9 team, Williams was apprehended without incident.
The capture of Williams brings relief to Tennessee, as he is considered a dangerous predator. Williams had previously attempted to escape custody, and his capture is seen as a significant achievement for law enforcement.
Williams was being transported from the Laurel County Correctional Center in Kentucky back to Tennessee when he kicked open a vehicle’s rear window and escaped. He was later spotted covered in blood in the Davis Street area of Greenville, TN.
In addition to the sexual assault charges in Washington County, Williams also faces federal child sexual abuse charges. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to his arrest.
The capture of Williams is a significant development in the ongoing case against him. His alleged crimes, including the rape and exploitation of minors, have caused great concern and led to a federal lawsuit filed by 10 anonymous women. They accuse the Johnson City Police Department of ignoring their complaints about Williams.
Williams has a history of evading law enforcement and was previously on the run for two years. During that time, videos allegedly showing him raping 52 different women were found on his electronic devices. Moreover, one of the thumb drives contained over 5,000 images of child pornography.
Despite Williams’ denial of the allegations, the evidence against him is substantial. He now faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
