A robbery suspect in Queens, New York, has been arrested more than a year after the incident, thanks to a pair of multicolored briefs that were visible above his low-slung trousers. The robbery took place at a tobacco shop on September 14, 2022, when three masked men entered the store. Two of them brandished guns while the third stole cash, merchandise, and cellphones from employees and customers.
Surveillance videos of the robbery showed the third suspect wearing brightly colored briefs with a large letter “R” in white and the year “1990” in yellow. This distinctive detail caught the attention of an anonymous tipster, who provided the suspect’s Instagram handle to the police. The tipster also informed the authorities that the robbers had attempted to sell their stolen goods at another location in Queens.
Detectives reviewed video footage from the sale location and identified the suspect without his mask, as he was now easily recognizable due to his colorful underwear. The police further confirmed his identity through his Instagram account and photos from prior arrests. The 30-year-old suspect was apprehended at his home in Queens by a joint task force consisting of the New York Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The arrested suspect is currently awaiting arraignment in federal court in Brooklyn. The other two robbery suspects involved in the incident are still at large, according to authorities.
