A shocking crime has unfolded in Ohio, as a 17-year-old girl stands accused of killing her boyfriend’s mother. Kaitlyn Coones appeared in court for the first time on Friday, facing charges of aggravated murder, murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse. Prosecutors revealed that Coones allegedly committed the heinous act after giving her boyfriend an ultimatum to kill his own mother.
According to Sylvania Township Detective Albright, Coones had expressed the need to “do something” about his mother, claiming that she was preventing their relationship from progressing. Investigators believe that Coones had been living in Jonathan Jones’ room in his mother’s house prior to the murder.
In a chilling turn of events, Coones would reportedly climb into Jonathan’s bedroom window to secretly reside in the house without his mother’s knowledge. On the day of the murder, Coones gave her boyfriend a five-hour window to carry out the act himself. When he failed to do so, she gave him an additional hour before taking matters into her own hands.
During this time, Nicole Jones, the victim, was unsuspectingly looking in the refrigerator. Coones allegedly strangled her and bludgeoned her head with a rock while Jonathan was in the living room. After the murder, the suspects purchased trash bags and a tarp to wrap Nicole’s body. They then cleaned up the crime scene and disposed of her body in a nearby dumpster. Authorities believe that the victim’s body may never be recovered.
The disturbing case took a twist when it was discovered that Coones had been reported missing from state custody in April by Stark County Children’s Services. Following Nicole’s murder, local police named Jonathan Jones as a suspect in Coones’ disappearance, leading law enforcement to believe that the pair had fled to Mexico.
Fortunately, U.S. Marshals were able to apprehend Jones in Mexico on May 8th and locate Coones. Coones’ defense attorney, Ann Baronas, argues that Coones is a victim herself.
