Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, a prominent Republican figure, is set to endorse a candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential race after Thanksgiving. Despite not running for the White House himself, Sununu has been actively involved in the presidential campaign trail in his state. He recently joined former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and former South Carolina Governor Chris Christie for town hall events in Hooksett and Nashua, respectively. Additionally, Sununu will team up with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for a campaign event in Manchester.
Sununu expressed his admiration for Haley’s efforts, stating that her message resonates with voters. However, he has yet to make a final decision on which candidate to endorse. This endorsement holds significant weight as Sununu emphasized that he plans to dedicate his full support to the chosen candidate.
Notably, two weeks ago, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds endorsed DeSantis, who is currently leading the race as the frontrunner. Sununu’s endorsement is expected to carry substantial influence, as he has assured that he will go above and beyond a mere announcement. He intends to actively campaign for the candidate he supports, leaving no stone unturned.
Sununu, a four-term governor, is confident in his ability to help the endorsed candidate establish a strong ground game in New Hampshire. He also acknowledged that although endorsements are often overhyped by the media, he believes there is an opportunity for the candidates to make significant gains with the voters.
The New Hampshire primary, which holds a prominent position as the first-in-the-nation, is scheduled for January 23, 2024, just eight days after the Iowa caucuses. Traditionally, Granite State voters are known for making late decisions regarding their preferred candidates. Sununu expects this trend to continue, with voters waiting until late December or early January to finalize their choices.
Although speculation arises regarding Sununu’s potential involvement in a future presidential administration, he made it clear that his priority is to support a great candidate and president. He expressed a desire to avoid any positions in Washington, stating that he is ready to pursue a “real job.”
