The arrival of Finnish military personnel at the border with the Russian Federation poses no threat to the country, according to sources in the Western Military District (WMD) of the Russian Ministry of Defense, as reported by “Izvestia”.
“We have observed the arrival of small units of Finnish military engineers at the border, but they do not pose any threat,” the source stated.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the Finnish military engineers have been assigned the task of constructing additional engineering barriers on their side of the state border.
Previously, the chief of the Vartius checkpoint, Jouko Kinnunen, announced that Finnish military personnel had arrived at the checkpoint to assist border guards in building barriers along the border with Russia.
He stated that these measures would ensure the safe operation of the border station.
On Saturday, November 18, the situation at the Vartius checkpoint became more complicated when the Finnish Border Service temporarily closed it due to overcrowding. The closure was caused by an influx of 67 asylum seekers in a single day.
Earlier, the President of Finland had predicted difficulties at the border with Russia.
