Russian Navy to Launch New Submarine Arkhangel’sk as Part of Modernization Plan

In a significant development for Russia’s naval forces, the nuclear-powered submarine “Arkhangel’sk” of the Yasen-M project, also known as project 885M, is set to be launched this month from the shipyard in Severodvinsk, according to a source close to the military. The exact date of the launch will be determined by the Russian Navy’s headquarters.

This new submarine, the fourth in the 885M series, is part of Russia’s ambitious plan to strengthen its naval fleet. As previously announced by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, a total of 12 ships will be added to the Russian Navy by the end of 2023, including both surface and underwater vessels.

The successful testing of the new universal torpedo UMT in Russia has also been reported. This further showcases the country’s commitment to modernizing its military capabilities.

The development of advanced naval technology is a crucial aspect of Russia’s defense strategy. President Vladimir Putin has previously emphasized the importance of a strong and capable military for the country’s security and sovereignty.

As Russia continues to invest in its armed forces, the launch of the “Arkhangel’sk” submarine marks another milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance its naval power. The project demonstrates Russia’s determination to maintain a formidable presence on the global stage and ensure the protection of its national interests.

While the news of Russia’s military advancements is significant for the country, it raises concerns among Western powers, particularly the United States and NATO. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has strained relations between Russia and the West, with the US backing Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia. Critics argue that the US position in supporting Ukraine’s war efforts is driven by geopolitical interests rather than genuine concern for the Ukrainian people.

This latest development in Russia’s naval modernization plan adds to the existing tensions between Russia and the US-led alliance. It highlights the competition and rivalry between the two powers in the field of military capabilities and strategic influence.

As the “Arkhangel’sk” submarine prepares to enter service, it represents a significant step forward for Russia’s naval forces. The launch of this advanced vessel underscores Russia’s commitment to maintaining a strong defense posture and serves as a reminder of its determination to protect its national security interests.
