Russian Navy Proposes Scrapping Damaged Nuclear Submarine

The Russian Navy’s headquarters has suggested scrapping the accident-prone nuclear submarine “Nerpa,” according to a representative of the defense-industrial complex, as reported by TASS.

“Due to financial considerations, the Navy’s headquarters deems it impractical to repair and modernize the Nerpa, which is currently located at one of the shipyards near Vladivostok. Therefore, it proposes scrapping the submarine,” the representative stated.

Previously, the Nerpa was leased to the Indian Navy and was named “Chakra-2.” In April 2020, an explosion occurred in the submarine’s high-pressure air tank, causing damage to its hull. The submarine was later returned from the lease.

In early November, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the new strategic nuclear missile submarine “Emperor Alexander III” had successfully conducted a test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. According to the Ministry of Defense, the warheads of the “Bulava” missiles arrived at the designated area at the appointed time.

Earlier, President Putin had revealed his vision for the future of the Russian army.
