Ken Squier, a legendary NASCAR announcer and broadcaster, has died at the age of 88. His passing on Wednesday night in Waterbury, Vermont, was confirmed by the management of the local WDEV radio, which he owned. Squier’s contributions to the growth of NASCAR were praised by Jim France, chairman and CEO of the organization, who referred to him as a superb storyteller and credited his voice as the soundtrack to many of NASCAR’s greatest moments.
Squier, although he never sat behind the wheel of a stock car, had a profound impact on the sport. His calls on TV and radio brought fans closer to the action, making him a fan favorite. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. expressed his gratitude for Squier’s significant role in growing stock car racing. Earnhardt acknowledged that Squier played a pivotal part in introducing NASCAR to the world during the historic Daytona 500 in 1979.
In addition to his broadcasting career, Squier also opened Thunder Road speedway in Barre, Vermont, in 1960. His contributions to racing were recognized by Vermont Governor Phil Scott, who described him as a true legend and a dear friend to many. Scott highlighted Squier’s impact on the sport, from coining the phrase “The Great American Race” during his time at CBS to his founding of Thunder Road, known as the “Nation’s Site of Excitement.”
NASCAR honored Squier’s legacy by naming its annual award for media excellence after him, along with broadcaster Barney Gall. Winston Kelley, executive director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, emphasized Squier’s ability to articulate the human side of NASCAR competitors.
