The recent test of the Patriot missile system in Romania has been deemed successful, according to reports from the country’s defense headquarters. General Daniel Petrescu, Chief of Defense Staff, participated in the live-fire exercises that took place at the Capu Midia shooting range on November 15. The objective of the event was to assess the performance of the Patriot system, which was introduced into the Romanian Air Force in 2020, and to prepare for its future use.
During the exercises, various types of drones were simulated as aerial targets, which the Patriot system successfully detected, tracked, and neutralized. However, there was a minor technical issue with the communication between the control center and one of the launchers, resulting in a one-hour delay for the third missile launch. As a result, the planned press conference by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu did not take place as he had left the venue.
Despite the overall success of the test, the news portal Observator believes that Romania failed the Patriot system test. According to their information, there was a loss of communication between one of the launchers and a missile, leading to the automatic launch of another missile. The newspaper Cotidianul highlights that the Patriot system, procured from the United States at a significant cost, did not perform as expected, considering it a failure.
