Colorado Hiker Found Dead, Dog Survives After Months of Search and Rescue Efforts

A Colorado hiker who went missing in August was tragically found dead last week, while his loyal dog miraculously survived by his side. Rich Moore, a 71-year-old resident of Pagosa Springs, embarked on a hiking trip with his dog up Blackhead Peak on August 19 and never returned. Despite extensive search and rescue operations, Moore could not be located until a hunter discovered his lifeless body in the Rio Blanco drainage, about 2.5 miles east of the peak, on October 30.

Taos Search and Rescue (TSR) teams were deployed to search for Moore after his car was found parked near the trailhead. The search efforts were challenging due to the steep terrain, requiring the team to be airlifted by helicopter. Delinda Vanne-Brightyn, a member of TSR, shared on Facebook that Moore’s body was found beneath the mountain-top, east of their insertion point.

The cause of Moore’s death is yet to be determined, according to the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office. However, amidst the tragedy, there was a glimmer of hope as Moore’s white Jack Russell terrier, Finney, was found alive next to his owner’s body. Finney was promptly taken to a veterinarian and has since been reunited with the Moore family.

Blackhead Peak, located in Archuleta County, stands at an elevation of 12,500 feet and is situated on the western boundary of the South San Juan Wilderness. The area is known for its challenging terrain, making it a popular destination for avid hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with hiking in remote areas. It highlights the importance of preparedness and caution when venturing into the wilderness. The search and rescue efforts undertaken by TSR exemplify the dedication and commitment of these brave individuals in ensuring the safety of hikers and the preservation of life.

While the loss of Rich Moore is a tragedy, the survival of his faithful companion, Finney, is a testament to the bond between humans and animals. The story serves as a reminder of the resilience and unwavering loyalty that our furry friends bring into our lives.

In conclusion, the discovery of Rich Moore’s body after months of searching and the survival of his dog, Finney, in the treacherous wilderness of Blackhead Peak is a poignant tale that reminds us of the risks and rewards of outdoor exploration. May Rich Moore rest in peace, and may Finney find comfort and solace in the embrace of his family once again.
