Gun Owners of America’s Antonia Okafor Cover discusses the increasing number of Black women becoming gun owners in the United States, according to a recent survey. In a recent incident in North Carolina, an armed female bystander came to the defense of a man who had been shot in the face by an attacker.
The Shelby Police Department in North Carolina reported that the incident occurred on Smith Street in Shelby. Unterio M. Jolly, 33, engaged in a verbal altercation with another man, after which the two went their separate ways. However, approximately 30 minutes later, Jolly allegedly tracked down the other man and confronted him with a gun. He proceeded to shoot the man in the face.
Fortunately, an unnamed bystander witnessed the incident and immediately intervened to protect the injured man. The bystander, who was legally armed and possessed a concealed carry permit, fired back at Jolly, hitting him five times. Jolly is currently in critical but stable condition, while the other man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Shelby Police Department has identified Jolly as the aggressor and he is now facing multiple charges, including felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, firearm possession by a felon, and assault by pointing a gun. Authorities are consulting with the District Attorney’s Office to determine if additional charges are necessary.
The incident highlights the importance of responsible gun ownership, particularly in cases where individuals are able to protect themselves and others from potential harm. As the number of gun owners, including Black women, continues to rise in the United States, it becomes crucial to promote the proper education and training necessary to handle firearms safely and effectively.
