French Minister of Defense Expresses Support for Communication with Russia

French Minister of Defense Sébastien Lecornu has stated that communication between the military leaders of France and Russia has contributed to preventing escalation between the two countries during difficult times. Lecornu expressed Paris’ readiness to resume such contacts if they prove to be useful and effective. He made these remarks in an interview with LCI television.

According to the minister, nuclear powers have certain obligations towards each other. He emphasized that several conversations have helped to contain escalation during “very sensitive moments.” Lecornu mentioned that he has had two or three discussions with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu. During these talks, the French defense chief said that they discussed “very specific matters” related to potential escalation.

Lecornu underscored his willingness to have further discussions with Shoigu when it is “useful and effective.”

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his openness to future negotiations involving Russia for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Previously, the US Secretary of State stated that Russia and China currently pose the “most acute threat to the world order” on the planet.
