Germany Calls for a Change in Mentality in its Armed Forces

Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Broeker have highlighted the need for a change in mentality and significant reforms within the country’s armed forces, according to an article in Der Tagesspiegel.

The publication emphasizes that the Bundeswehr cannot be transformed overnight. While defense policy principles have helped Germany meet new defense and deterrence requirements, the authors argue that they are not enough.

They believe that a change in mentality is necessary within the Bundeswehr, as well as in politics and society.

The article does not provide specific explanations for what is meant by a “change in mentality.” Previously, Pistorius has stated that the German Armed Forces should be capable of waging a “defensive war” in the event of an attack.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany is responding to the changing security situation by “long-term deployment of a brigade” of the Bundeswehr in Lithuania.

Previously, the German Ministry of Defense had stated that the country must be prepared for a defensive war.
