In a devastating incident, Colonel Mikhail Filiponenko, a former chief of the People’s Militia in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR), was killed in Luhansk. The news was confirmed by his colleague, Deputy Yuri Yurov, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Colonel Filiponenko played a significant role in the establishment of the republic’s volunteer forces and had a distinguished career in the LNR.
According to the Luhansk Information Center, citing Filponenko’s son Ivan, an explosive device detonated in the deputy’s car, causing injuries that were fatal. Witnesses at the scene, including passing drivers, attempted to assist Filiponenko, but sadly, he passed away immediately. This is not the first assassination attempt on the deputy, as his vehicle was targeted in a bombing in front of the LNR’s representation in the Security and Cooperation Coordination Center (SCCC) back in February 2022. While Filponenko survived that attack, his driver was injured.
Born on June 20, 1975, in Luhansk (formerly known as Voroshilovgrad), Filiponenko graduated from the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture and worked as a private entrepreneur in the construction sector. From 2014 to 2022, he served in the LNR’s People’s Militia and was a veteran of the armed conflict in the region. In the LNR parliament, he led the LDPR faction and was a member of the committee on interaction with public associations, information policy, and inter-parliamentary cooperation. He received numerous awards from Russia, the LNR, and the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR).
