A paddleboarder in Scotland had an unexpected run-in with the world’s second-largest shark, which circled him as he recorded the “eerie” encounter. Meanwhile, in Huntington Beach, California, a two-mile stretch of Sunset Beach was closed after a shark sighting and an injured baby whale beached.
The closure of Sunset Beach was announced by the city of Huntington Beach after reports of aggressive shark activity and the presence of an injured whale. The city stated that beachgoers witnessed splashing and aggressive shark behavior prior to the whale washing ashore. Bite marks were also observed on the mammal while it was still alive.
In response to the aggressive shark behavior, the city implemented its policy of closing the shoreline and ocean for one mile in each direction of the incident. The closure began on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. and is expected to last until Tuesday at the same time.
This incident comes shortly after three juvenile great white sharks were spotted by San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards patrolling Blacks Beach. These recent shark sightings highlight the need for increased vigilance and safety measures in coastal areas.
The closure of Sunset Beach has impacted surfing activities, with the US Open of Surfing taking place during this period. Surfing fans gathered on the beach and Huntington Beach Pier to watch the action, but now they are unable to do so due to the temporary closure.
