Climate Activists Damage Famous Painting in London’s National Gallery to Protest Oil and Gas Leases

Climate activists from the organization Just Stop Oil made headlines on Monday as they took “safety hammers” to the famous 17th-century painting “Rokeby Venus” by Diego Velázquez in London’s National Gallery. The protesters called for the United Kingdom to put an end to new oil and gas projects in the country, claiming that millions of lives are at stake. The incident occurred while tourists were viewing the artwork.

The two activists, identified as Harrison Donnelly, 20, and Hanan, 22, targeted the painting by striking the glass with hammers and shouting at museum patrons. They argued that politics has failed to address the urgency of the climate crisis and emphasized the need to take immediate action to stop oil production. The activists then sat down in front of the painting, which is estimated to be worth £72.5 million.

This is not the first time “Rokeby Venus” has faced such an attack. Over a century ago, suffragettes slashed the painting in their fight for women’s voting rights. The National Gallery spokesperson confirmed that the two individuals responsible for the recent damage have been arrested and charged with suspicion of criminal damage.

The incident has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of direct action in raising awareness about climate change. Just Stop Oil spokesperson referenced Emmeline Pankhurst’s statement that “the argument of the broken window pane is the most valuable argument in modern politics,” highlighting the need for drastic measures to bring about change. The organization invites everyone to join their cause and stand against the influence of oil corporations.

Just earlier this month, Just Stop Oil activists faced backlash and were labeled as “stupid people” by an enraged crowd after interrupting a performance of “Les Miserables” in London’s West End. The Metropolitan Police arrested five people on suspicion of aggravated trespass during the incident.

The damage to the famous artwork serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle between environmental activists and the oil industry. As the world faces increasing concerns about climate change, the debate surrounding the role of oil and gas in exacerbating the crisis continues. This incident highlights the urgency felt by climate activists and their determination to disrupt the status quo.
